Growing up, split pea soup may have been the only green that you actually enjoyed eating. Could it be due to the delicious creaminess of the soup? Or maybe it was the rich aroma that came from the pot of onions, carrots, celery, and broth? Whatever the reason, split pea soup holds a fond memory for many people.

Today, it’s often a go-to comfort dish for rainy days or times where you’re feeling homesick. We think it’s time for the traditional soup you grew up on to get an upgrade. That’s where the new Spicy Split Pea Soup recipe comes into play.

With all the nostalgia and warmth of our Organic Lower Sodium Split Pea Soup, this spicy twist on the classic offers a more mature depth of flavor that will wake up your tastebuds!

Spicy Split Pea Soup

Spice, Spice Baby

What if we told you that all you need to take your split pea soup from warm to spicy was three ingredients? Well, believe it because it’s true. All it takes is a dash of chili flakes, a bit of sliced red bell pepper, and a sprinkle of fresh parsley to create this recipe!

By adding the chili flakes and red bell pepper, we enhance the delicious spices already in Dr. McDougall’s Organic Lower Sodium Split Pea Soup and bring out the heat. It’s incredible how just a touch of red pepper flakes can completely transform the flavor profile!

Is It Really That Easy?

As the saying goes, if it’s not broken, then don’t fix it! Our Split Pea Soup uses ingredients like lemon peel, citric acid, flavorful spices, and seasonal vegetables to create a decadent and thick soup.

When it’s that good, all that’s left to do is add a handful of ingredients to make a new recipe. The chili flakes, red bell pepper, and fresh parsley build off the ingredients already there, so there’s less time spent cooking and more time spent eating!

What About the Ham?

You probably grew up on the traditional split pea soup that uses chicken broth, ham hock, or ham bone. Our Split Pea Soup is 100% vegan, gluten-free, and still has 15 grams of protein per serving!

So, where does this protein come from if there’s no meat? Luckily, there are plenty of alternative ways to get protein from vegetables, starch, and more. Our Split Pea Soup uses potato, onions, carrots, celery, and of course peas to provide you with plenty of protein per serving!

How Exactly Do I Make This Recipe?

We thought you’d never ask! We’re going to start by pouring the Split Pea Soup contents into a medium-sized saucepan. Cook over medium heat, then add in the chili flakes.

Remember to thoroughly stir in the chili flakes to combine them with the soup. The last thing you want is to grab a spoonful of chili flakes on the first bite.

Once warm, remove from heat and pour into a bowl. Next, top your warm bowl of soup with the sliced red bell pepper and add chopped parsley.

If you would like, you can add in a drizzle of olive oil on top of the soup. While the addition of olive oil is totally optional, it does add a nice touch. Then, all that’s left to do is sit back and enjoy!

It Doesn’t Get Much Easier Than That

In less than 15 minutes, you have a big bowl of Spicy Split Pea Soup! This recipe is perfect during winter days, where it seems to get dark impossibly early. Let’s face it, when the sun goes down, motivation decreases. The darkness has a way of just making us want to curl up and relax. So, the last thing that you want to do is delay your movie time by sweating over an intricate dinner, only to end up ordering a pizza when something inevitably burns. Trust us, we’ve been there, and it’s not fun.

So, why make it harder than it needs to be? Let’s save ourselves the time, energy, dirty dishes, and frustration by embracing quick and hearty recipes like this Spicy Split Pea Soup! Did we mention it goes great with a glass of red wine?

We Know It Tastes Good, But Is It Good For You?

There’s a common assumption that anything vegan and gluten-free is automatically good for you. While that’s not always true, luckily, it’s true here! We’re all about providing you with easy, delicious meals that are good for you. We’re trying to fuel you up with nothing but the best, not slow you down with processed “food”.

Let’s breakdown the nutrition of our Split Pea Soup. There are only 250 calories per serving and is lower sodium! So, what exactly does lower sodium mean? There are only 540 mg of sodium per serving, which makes it much lower in sodium than most alternatives! To compare, traditional split pea soup can have up to 700 mg of sodium per serving.

Did we mention there are 16 grams of fiber per serving? While no one wants to talk about the specifics of fiber, let’s just say your body will thank us later for it. There are  also only 6 grams of sugar, which is 2-4 grams less than the traditional serving. That may not seem like a big difference, but it makes a massive difference in the long run!
